“Children are smarter than any of us. Know how I know that? I don’t know one child with a full time job and children.”Bill Hicks

You should never stop learning. As John Rooney so eloquently puts it, “The quickest way to become an old dog is to stop learning new tricks.” Learning not only helps us better ourselves, but it keeps us young. And we really think there is something to this youth thing. Children really seem to have everything figured out…well, sort of.

Kids may say the darndest things, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t listen to what they have to say. There is actually a lot that we can learn from children. A LOT. We just have to be willing to open our ears and listen.

What Children can Teach Us about Business

According to founder and CEO of Young Chefs Academy, Julie Burleson, not only is running a business like having a family, but there are several business lessons we can learn from our children.

Be Passionate!

Children are passionate about a lot of things, from that new television show to the new toy to that funny-shaped rock they found in the backyard. It’s hard to believe we could have ever been so passionate about seemingly unimportant things…so why aren’t we just as passionate now about the things that actually matter, like our business?

Surround Yourself with the Right People

Both at work and at home, it is important to surround yourself with the right people, people you can trust. Children may call these people friends, but you may have other names for them – husband, wife, business partner, colleague, and, yes, friend. The important thing is that you have a support system to help you day to day.

When is Your “Happy Time?”

Your happy time is that time of day when you are most, well, happy. When you find this magical time – maybe it is after lunch or after that second cup of coffee in the morning – try and plan important meetings accordingly. When you are at your best, when you are at your happiest, you will be most effective at getting your point across and convincing others to take note.

Laughter is the Best Medicine

When in doubt, laugh. Business is business and, while important, is not the end all, be all of our lives. When business gets you down, laugh it off and remind yourself of what really matters most.

As Dr. Seuss once famously said, “Adults are just outdated children.” Well, maybe it’s time we upgrade our software and get back up-to-date, because these children seem to be on to something.
